In 2015, I started photographing friends and family with a medium-format Rollei camera. In October 2024, I decided to bring these photographs to life using Runway, a then-new and rather mysterious generative AI platform I had already been using to create mockups for Failing Forward.
But these were my photographs, not necessarily my faces. And I wasn’t sure the people in them would appreciate being brought to life by a machine. So I prompted the machine to make them cover their faces with their own hands.
This was an early experiment with platform-based generative video. Less than a year later, the technology had changed almost beyond recognition. The questions around privacy and consent, not quite as much.
